Sidebar: Deep in the Heart of Texas

Summer’s over, it’s chilly, I can get regular lattes again and not worry about sweating to death on my commute. Yay. I love fall. But I am still sad to see summer go only because I am so not ready for holiday chatter. Anyway, it’s time for a Sidebar post, where I share some more personal events going on in my life and work! I hope you share some of your going-ons as well! I’d love to get to know you all better! My favorite things for September included finally hosting a dinner party at our new home. We moved in June and I have been a mega-brat about it.…

Just the Right Amount of Color: Blushes for Work

One of my favorite parts of my makeup routine is putting on blush. It just livens up my face so much. Though to be honest, when I first started working I didn’t really use blush very often. It was a “special occasion” product.  But then I started doing some trainings and more public speaking and caught myself on camera one day and was like oh… Now I especially appreciate blush on days that I’m doing trainings because it just gives my look a little more dimension.  So now, little by little, I’ve accumulated quite a stash and wanted to share some of my favorite blushes for work. When I’m picking…

Looking Good: Eyeshadow Primer for Work

One of the negatives about makeup is that it’s so easy to get it wrong. Too heavy-handed and it can look overwhelming; a slight misapplication can look sloppy; too light and it’s gone in an hour—I takes patience and practice, imo. One big thing for me is that if you’re going to wear makeup in a professional setting it needs to look appropriate and be applied well. A big problem I see (and I categorize it as a problem because it can be distracting) is smeared eyeshadow/liner. Eyelids can get oily, even mine and I have a super dry skin. I hate to admit that I’m often distracted by people at…

    Nude Lipsticks for Work

So in case you don’t know this—I’ve always been a makeup fanatic, but I didn’t turn into a full blown product junkie until I started studying for the Bar. That’s when I discovered Youtube gurus and it’s been hell on my bank account ever since. However, one big mistake I’d make is that I’d see a pretty shade on someone and go get the same thing—not thinking about how that shade may not work for my skin tone #rookiemistake. So when I started working full-time, I finally made it a point to buy nudes that were actually Nude For Me, which as a brown girl, is really important to take…

Throwback–Posts You May Have Missed in Our First Year

For those new followers (or just for those that would like a refresher), here are some of the earlier posts from Latinas Uprising that are worth a revisit–especially as a new school year starts and many others will begin new jobs in the weeks to come! How would you/do you react when you’re mistaken (sometimes on purpose) as the interpreter? Different shoe options when working in conservative law offices (side note: wedges forever!) The best way to study in law school is to Study How You Study! The importance of being an active alumna, even if (or especially if) you didn’t feel very welcomed at your educational institution. How to…

From Day to Night: Makeup for Networking Events

One thing I hate is lugging makeup with me back and forth to work. I keep some cosmetics at work (mostly lip balms and lotions), but I don’t take a full case of makeup to do touchups throughout the day. I just figure that by 5 o’clock everyone looks just as drained—and again, the culture of my work doesn’t really call for a full face of makeup throughout the day. However, whenever I have events in the evening, I always do my best to prepare so that my face looks bright-eyed and polished; especially when it’s a networking event with private attorneys. I mean, let’s be real, other legal aid…

    Makeup Transition for the Summer.

After spending a long weekend in Tampa, I’ve decided to officially switch into my “summer makeup mode,” even though it’s still not super warm here in Chicago.  If you’re a professional woman who uses makeup, then I really recommend switching gears to lighter, brighter hues and products during the hotter months.  Not only do the lighter products keep you feeling refreshed, but softer tones make you look fresh and brighter than if you stick to the same routine throughout the year.  For me the change in routine may seem a little dramatic because I’m a little out of control when it comes to “putting on my face” before work. i.e. I…

    Chocolate for Work: Eyeshadow Options

I mentioned before that I really love makeup and I really love colorful makeup, especially a bright eye.  When I was younger I would ignore the “don’t be matchy-matchy” rule and match my shadow to my outfit and I loved it!  But, obviously, now that I’m older and working as an attorney bright blue shadow isn’t going to work while I’m talking to judges.  Sad.  But! that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun with a neutral eye.  So, today we’re comparing two palettes by Too Faced that are great options for work: Too Faced’s Chocolate Bar and their second edition, Semi-Sweet, offers a great variety of neutral eyes and mixes enough…

    Makeup and Agency

Today’s post is a long road to a quick product recommendation, but before I get to that I really want to talk about our agency and control when it comes to wearing makeup (bear with me, it’s worth it!). First, do you use makeup? I love makeup–like, it’s a hoarding problem. When I first started using makeup, I was young and did it just because it’s what I thought that girls did. As I grew older, I became attached to the routine and thrill of new products. But I felt guilty because I felt that by using makeup I was perpetuating the idea that wearing makeup is something women “must”…

    Common Makeup Missteps

Ok first, I’m not about telling women what to do when it comes to their appearance.  There are so many issues when it comes to discussing makeup and fashion, and it’s far too easy to become patronizing when giving women advice on how we dress.  Instead, I’m going to attempt to talk about distractions and how to avoid common missteps when it comes to using makeup in a conservative/professional setting.   However, if at the end of this post you still want to do what you want to do–go ‘head! Everyone that knows me, knows I’m obsessed with makeup, but I definitely tone down my look for work.  It’s just a…
