Why Your Finals Matter Even More Than Before

I’m still processing what happened on Tuesday. I know that everyone is, but I felt it really important to send a message to current law students who are feeling overwhelmed with this situation. I didn’t experience anything similar to this when I was in law school—“this” not being the negative results of an election, but entire communities of legal professionals stunned and unsure about the future. Obviously, immigration attorneys are concerned, but anyone interested in consumer protection, legal aid, the environment, education, housing, etc etc. is facing a great unknown and concern about how the legal landscape will be impacted. And that doesn’t even cover the concern over the physical and…

What Did I Just Read? Mastering Your Law School Assignments

One of the biggest problems with being a new law school student is that you rarely have a chance to truly gage how you’re doing in your courses until the end. Of course, some professors offer midterms to help you understand what’s going on, but that’s not always a given. Additionally, you not only have to worry about mastering the topics, but more importantly you have to learn how to analyze, i.e. that elusive “thinking like a lawyer” thing.  My 1L year, by midway through, I felt really confident in my classes. I thought I was understanding the topics and could follow along with the discussion—I thought things were great.…

Balancing Act: Dealing with the Guilt & Frustration Attached to your Finances

I was running out of data on my phone early this month and had to resort to reading during my commute. Usually I have a book, but this past week I decided to read my “guilty pleasure” magazines and I’m so glad I did! I’m a long-time subscriber to Glamour and was so impressed by this article on finances. The author focuses on helping young adults establish some financial standards for themselves, but through her writing she also revealed some struggles that first-generation professionals experience. I kept thinking, “omg, this is a struggle so many of us experience!” Yes, I said omg because somehow growing up in the Midwest I…

The Bar Exam: Helping Family Understand Your Stress

Many will start their Bar course this week. I remember clearly how much fear of the unknown I had going into my first course.  And rather than feeling somewhat relieved after the first day, I left feeling more nervous than before because I just didn’t know how I was going to learn everything I needed to learn in time for the Bar. I say this not to freak you out, but to show solidarity in the complete mind-F that the Bar prep can be; it’s a really difficult time because this is high stress, high stakes. Throughout the summer we’ll share Bar prep tips that are useful for those studying,…

What Happens When You Hate Law School?

There’s a (completely not true) saying that people either loved law school and hate practicing or they hated law school but love practicing.  Obviously, the winning combo is the latter because you do that for longer. But having to do something that you seriously dislike for three years really takes its toll.  And law school often has it’s highs and lows, so there are moments you’re loving it and times you really believe you’ve made a huge mistake. That kind of love/hate relationship is super common, but then there are also situations for people where there aren’t many highs with constant lows.  You get to a point where you seriously consider…

Start Hustling Now: Preparing for your Summer Legal Job Search

It may seem too soon to start looking for summer jobs, but before you know it you’ll be frantically writing outlines, cramming for finals, trying to keep up with readings, and –oh yeah—apply for jobs.   Knowing that there’s a huge time-crunch coming down the pike means you should what you can now so that you don’t half-ass your job search. I’ve mentioned before, but the end of October during my first semester in law school was one family issue after another. I, unfortunately, got distracted and suddenly it was second semester and I still didn’t have anything lined up.  I got really lucky, but you shouldn’t depend on luck!  While you’re…

Law School Study Groups: Help or Hinder?

One of the good & bad things about law school is the push for everyone to study a certain way. It’s good because it may open up new avenues of learning information that you hadn’t used before but it can also work against you because you may feel pressured to do what everyone else is doing—even if that doesn’t work for you. A big part of studying in law school is Study Groups, now obviously study groups happen anywhere but they are a different beast in law school.  In many schools, study groups take on a weird, competitive nature of resume collecting, secretive note-sharing, and other weird behavior.  That’s not…
