The Beginning.

It’s the last Friday of the month! How is it already almost October, Fall, and nearing the end of the year?!  I don’t understand it.   But this post is titled “The Beginning” because it is a new season and because tomorrow so many people will go take the LSAT, which is the official real beginning of the law school process.  We wish all of the test-takers an abundance of great luck and calm minds.  And for those Latinas taking the exam we want to scream: Si Se Puede!  We are keeping our fingers crossed!

For the last Friday post, let’s share some of our favorite stories from around the internet (if you follow us on twitter you get these stories at a much more timely manner! (@LatinasUprising).  Let me know what you think of these articles and/or if you have any favorites you’d like to share–leave it in the comments!

Links for the month

Hispanic.com did an article on our site!  Very exciting to get to spread the message about our little internet community.

On women’s issues, this article by Careerist is about how “women” aren’t striving for leadership roles, but “Blacks, LGBTs” do strive for those positions.  The problem, for me, was that there’s no clarification about what they mean by women–I mean, it’s obvious they mean white women, but white women will have a very different experience than Latinas.  Are we clumped with the “women” category or “Hispanic”?  Some clarification would be nice–and also to, in general, not be excluded when we discuss women’s issues.

Sad and horrifying:  A University of Chicago student group upset that victims were posting names of people who may have committed acts of gendered violence responded by threatening to rape and harm those said victims.

Something to check on–if you purchased birth control from CVS did you get unnecessarily charged?  Apparently that may be not so correct.

Do you follow LatinoUSA on NPR?  It’s my favorite weekly show.  Last week’s  episode discussed the meatpacking industries and how Jewish allies were able to help immigrant worker’s job conditions improve.  Fascinating and a great reminder that not all change and rights implemented must come from the lawyers (though let’s keep it real, the threat of a lawsuit is always an agent of change!).

Students protesting in Colorado for a balanced curriculum.

Something near and dear to my heart–financial support for an adequate public defender system!  The right to legal representation is such a vital and necessary right, yet often glossed over and not funded appropriately.

Speaking of Holder–he’s resigning and I’m excited to see who will be the next pick!  Any ideas?

Finally on the law school front–some heavy duty trolling by the Federalist Society at Northwestern (what is it with these top Chicago schools?):  serving Chik-fil-A at an event that discusses marriage.  Not funny and totally highlights how another marginalized group must plead their humanity for respect as well.  Happy to hear that the LLSA at NU Law helped provide an alternative.

Also, when is the ABA going to try to make things more workable for students?  Thankfully they have lifted the 20 hours of work restriction, but that doesn’t really solve the problem.  Allowing students to get paid and credit doesn’t either, imo.  The focus should really be:  why is tuition SO expensive!?

Happy Fall! And again, GOOD LUCK to all the LSAT takers this weekend!!
