    Sidebar: Booked and Busy

That is how I would define February. I’m booked and hella busy in all arenas of life. Which is good, because that is always good but it is also stressful. Work has been busy like normal but there has been added work because one of the staff attorneys I supervise left so I have a few more added cases. There’s not a ton of work to do on them (like urgent deadlines) but adding more to your caseload is always stressful. I’ve also done a lot of extra work in terms of committees and projects outside of my direct rep that has been time consuming and mentally exhausting. It’s one…

    Sidebar: Where to Even Start

The title says it all. I have been hemming and hawing since the beginning of the year about work. I didn’t really know where I was heading and I was a little nervous about the outcome. Let me start at the beginning. For New Year’s I made getting a new position one of my goals. I had hoped it would be something new at work, but wasn’t sure and I was pushing myself that if nothing was coming I would start looking for other work outside my agency. I wanted to stay but knew that even though I loved my agency, my clients, my team, and the work that I…

    Sidebar: It’s 2018 ya’ll

Ok so January seemed like it went on forever, right? Maybe because I had a ton to do and vacation at the end of the month so it just seemed to drag. Not in a bad way, just a slow way  lol. Anyway, 2018 has been nice so far and different all at the same time. First, let me start with the nice. We celebrated NYE at a local Mexican restaurant called Adobo and it was just a really decadent dinner; filled with drinks and delicious food. Total gluttony and the perfect way to ring in a new year, imo. So that was a lot of fun. Soon after the…

Sidebar: Don’t Throw Away Your Shot

Um, it’s already November (i.e. Sidebar time). That’s cray. October was so much fun though! First, work has been pretty steady so that’s always good. It’s immigration New Year, meaning visas are being issued now that it’s their new fiscal year and I’m waiting for approval notices to trickle in…so slowly. The backlog is a mess, but at least I am getting some approvals. We also celebrated Latinx History Month at work, which is super fun! My mom visited and she helped me work on making our own Loteria. I don’t think she expected to draw and color while she came up for the weekend, but quality time is quality…

Sidebar: Deep in the Heart of Texas

Summer’s over, it’s chilly, I can get regular lattes again and not worry about sweating to death on my commute. Yay. I love fall. But I am still sad to see summer go only because I am so not ready for holiday chatter. Anyway, it’s time for a Sidebar post, where I share some more personal events going on in my life and work! I hope you share some of your going-ons as well! I’d love to get to know you all better! My favorite things for September included finally hosting a dinner party at our new home. We moved in June and I have been a mega-brat about it.…

What To Do Your 1L Summer

For many 1Ls, you’re about a month away before you’re able to really start applying for summer jobs. I remember during my first 1L semester not really understanding the importance of looking for work that was still months away. I mean, how could I know the importance when I was still just a few months into law school and had no idea how the process really worked? I knew that people starting applying in the fall, but that seemed so silly to me—surely this could wait until spring, right? I totally didn’t know the ins and outs of summer jobs and how the “good” positions are offered before the year…
