Law School,  Work Life Balance

Gift Guide: Law Students

I remember how eager I was for winter break my 1L year. First semester is no joke and it’s not just because it’s stressful–it’s also intimidating because you are so much in the dark about the process.  Are you understanding the material? Will you know how to do the essay the right way? Will you beat the curve? What is the curve?!

It’s tough. But here is some light towards the end of the tunnel: presents!

If you’re looking for special items that law students will love here are some guaranteed favorites:

  1.   Stress Relief.  Manzanilla, lavender, etc all have some calming influences that law students need. Not only are they sleep-deprived, but often the stress makes it hard to sleep. I used to take a lot of Tylenol PM when I was in law school (as directed!) because I had such a hard time actually sleeping. Stress relief oils/scents are so necessary.
  2. Groceries. Random, but not only do they only have time to study, they definitely don’t have time to go grocery shopping. Consider gifting them groceries delivered at their door! Peapod was a great option when I was a student and InstaCart is very competitive as well! On a regular basis, having your groceries delivered is a luxury but as a one-off gift, it’s actually really thoughtful and practical!
  3.   Resume portfolio. There are so many options for sleek, professional portfolios for a student to bring to job interviews and other professional gigs.
  4.   Water tumbler. I mean, I’m a water fiend so I can’t NOT encourage these types of gifts. And you can’t have enough water tumblers—you just can’t!
  5.   Inspiration. What a difference it makes to know who your supporters are; and to gift a student with something tangible that reminds them that you are rooting for their professional achievements really makes a difference. I love the Latino anthem of Si Se Puede.  And that’s often what a student needs to hear. (bonus: Mano y Metal is a Latina owed-small business!)
  6.   Time. Offer to take them out for lunch/dinner when the dust settles (or as a study break!).  Not only will they appreciate a free meal, but law students need to be reminded that life exists outside of school. A breath of fresh air helps them re-focus as they get back to their studies.

What else is a good gift for law students? What’s something you received that was really useful?!
