    Sidebar: Rest and Relaxation

April owes me nothing! It was a great month full of rest. Much needed. It started with a big professional accomplishment—I facilitated my first city-wide town hall meeting by myself. How grown up lol Basically the city often puts on open meetings to discuss important issues and receive feedback from community. And of course depending on the topic, things can go south. Thankfully, my years of experience training other attorneys, facilitating discussions, and camera work all prepared me to take this on. I was really nervous for lots of reasons but not only did it not go terrible, people enjoyed my approach so it was nice to be able to…

    Sidebar: Where to Even Start

The title says it all. I have been hemming and hawing since the beginning of the year about work. I didn’t really know where I was heading and I was a little nervous about the outcome. Let me start at the beginning. For New Year’s I made getting a new position one of my goals. I had hoped it would be something new at work, but wasn’t sure and I was pushing myself that if nothing was coming I would start looking for other work outside my agency. I wanted to stay but knew that even though I loved my agency, my clients, my team, and the work that I…

    Sidebar: Moving Day

Um, October was a whirlwind. We moved. Finally. It has been a long time coming but we have finally moved house. Whilst events leading up to this have been very stressful, I’m very excited for this next chapter in our lives. We do have a lot of things left to sort out though before we can finally call our house a home. So this has basically taken up all of my time. We were told that the house would be ready in a week, so we had to pack and get ready super fast. The house is amazing. Honestly, I could have moved anywhere because I had a lot of…

    Side Bar: Summer Nights

July can’t be over because that means I only have one week with interns left. Waaaa! This summer has been nothing if not productive. If I play my cards right, I will have filed TEN applications this month, which is unheard of (for me)!  Ok but other than filing cases, July was like perfect Chicago summer for me. July included some fun at the beach   My best friend visited from Tx and I got to hang with my baby buddy Lincoln!   Hung out with my prima (who’s going back to Tampa soon 🙁 ) She finished her semester and will be going back for the fall semester in…

    Sidebar: What Just Happened?

Thankful this month is over. I went in with such high expectations. And, well, dot dot dot. November 9th was the worst day of my career. I’ve often dealt with clients calling in fear after hearing about raids or rumors in their communities, but this was so different. It was gut-wrenching. It was the end of hope. No reform, no protection, no rights. It’s still so hard to think about. But this has also been a catalyst. I am changing some formats here to better serve my readers and community. First, in 2017, I will go to two post a week instead of three. This will allow me to do…

Get It Together: Must-Have Items for your Law Office

I have been in my the same little office space for four years now, and have very slowly acquired some must-haves to make things more bearable at work. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job but it’s still a job, you know? I spend most of my time at my desk, in my office, so it’s important that my desk is comfortable. Here are things at my desk that I reach for constantly. If you’re new to your office space and are unsure what items to bring I suggest the following: One. Things to make you look put together. If your firm doesn’t do business casual than you’re mostly…
